I Passed My CWSP Exam 🎉
Today I passed the CWSP exam! Seeing “Congratulations, you’ve passed!” instantly made me do a happy dance. 🛜✨
Just like that, I am officially CWSP-certified. How’s that for a happy new year?!
Why CWSP matters
If you work in wireless long enough, you realize something important: security is not a feature. It is the foundation. You can design the most beautiful RF environment, tune roaming perfectly, and still fail if security is poorly implemented.
For me, CWSP was never just another badge. It was about:
- Understanding how Wi‑Fi security works under the hood
- Explaining the reasoning behind authentication and encryption choices
- Designing WLANs that are fast, reliable, and defensible
- Proving I could do it while juggling work, life, and kids
How I Prepared
While deep in CWDP study mode, CWSP quietly waited in the background. Then I got the message: CWSP-207 would retire on December 31st, 2025. That was the push I needed.
I switched gears, refocused, and dove into studying with one goal: pass CWSP before the deadline. Deadlines can be motivating, even if I prefer to take my time for future certifications.
Here’s what helped me get there:
Official CWSP Study Guide by Tom Carpenter
I read the book cover to cover. Having passed the Cisco Wireless CCNP, not everything was new, but the book is dense and explains the why behind Wi‑Fi security. I took notes, re-read chapters, and made sure I truly understood authentication and key-management flows.
Blogs from Other Wireless Engineers
Reading blogs from engineers who had already taken CWSP helped me a lot. Special shoutout to Robin Decloedt. Your explanations made several concepts click when the book alone did not. Sometimes, hearing the same idea in a slightly different way is all it takes.
Official Practice Exams
Practice exams were a huge confidence booster. The questions are very similar to the real exam—not identical, but close enough to:
- Check your understanding
- Spot weak areas
- Get used to CWNP’s question style
If you do well on practice exams and understand why each answer is correct, you are on the right track.
The Exam Experience
CWSP is about mindset and mechanics. You need a complete understanding of risk assessments, practical security best practices, balancing security with usability, and how policies, procedures, and incident response work together. Knowledge of real-world threats and defenses. You need to know about KRACK, Evil Twin attacks and how to mitigate them.
You need to understand how Wi‑Fi security works under the hood. That means:
- Knowing the evolution from WPA to WPA2 to WPA3 and why each step mattered
- Understanding encryption versus hashing and how key management ties everything together
- Being comfortable with PMK, PTK, and GTK and more: what they are, how they are derived, and when to use them
- Understanding WIPS, WIDS, WNMS, and fast secure roaming (FT) and how these systems work together to detect threats, maintain visibility, and enable secure roaming without hurting user experience
This is not about memorizing acronyms. It is about understanding the full security story from start to finish.
Towards my dream, CWNE!
CWSP is one milestone on my journey to becoming CWNE. If you are thinking about CWSP and wondering if it is worth it, the answer is yes.
Hard? Yes.
Rewarding? Absolutely.
If I can pass it while juggling work, kids, and life, you can too.
Next up on my journey: CWDP, CWAP, and CWISA.
Until next time, keep the signal strong!
