About

Wireless engineer, blogger, and permanently curious about what happens between the AP and the client.

Sháron Godschalk

Hi, I’m Sháron Godschalk, the Wi-Fi Dutchess. I’ve been a wireless network engineer since 2013, and these days I design and deliver WLAN projects in Network Services at Wageningen University & Research.

Before that I worked on networks in offices, shops, warehouses, large distribution centres and sites spread over several buildings. Design, site surveys, rollouts, tuning and a lot of troubleshooting. What I took away from all of it: a network can look great on a heatmap and still drive people mad. Good signal doesn’t help much if the client is fighting for airtime or roaming at the wrong moment.

So I like to dig. I want to know why something happens, not just make the ticket go away. Sometimes that takes one question, sometimes a packet capture, a spectrum scan and an evening of stubbornness.

How I work: WAVE

Over the years I turned that habit into a method I call WAVE:

  • Wireless: the RF basics. AP placement, antennas, channels, power.
  • Airtime: utilisation, interference, retries. What clients actually get.
  • Validation: a design is a plan, not proof. Measure it.
  • Experience: in the end it only matters whether the network works for the people using it.

Why this blog

I write about what I run into: troubleshooting stories, design choices, my CWNP journey, and now and then an opinion. Writing it down helps me learn it properly, and if it saves another engineer an afternoon, even better.

Outside of Wi-Fi

I’m a mum, and I make things: I sculpt and I do theatre. Maybe that’s why I like this job. It needs both a logical head and a bit of creativity, plus some detective work.

Say hi

On 11 November 2026 I’m speaking at Wi-Co Utrecht, so come and say hello if you’re there. Working on a tricky WLAN, or stuck on a problem that makes no sense? I’m always up for comparing notes. Find me on LinkedIn.
